The Delhi and District Cricket Association has named Aaryavir Sehwag to lead their Under-19 side for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy One Day Tournament 2026-27. The 18-year-old right-handed batter, son of former India opener Virender Sehwag, takes on his first significant captaincy role at the domestic level. The tournament is scheduled to get underway in Visakhapatnam on October 8.

The DDCA confirmed a 16-member squad for the campaign, with Arnav Bugga appointed as vice-captain alongside Sehwag. The appointment comes at a meaningful stage in Aaryavir's development, following his recent exposure to India Under-19 cricket through a three-match Youth ODI series against Australia held in Rajkot.

How did Aaryavir Sehwag perform in the India U19 Youth ODI series against Australia?

Aaryavir featured in all three Youth ODIs against Australia and accumulated 109 runs across the series. He got off the mark with 28 from 26 deliveries in a rain-affected opening fixture, which India won by seven runs. His best effort came in the second match, where he reached 47 before a run-out ended his innings three runs short of a half-century. He then added 34 in the third game, giving him three solid starts without a substantial conversion.

His junior record also carries a remarkable long-format performance. During the 2024 Cooch Behar Trophy, Aaryavir struck 297 for Delhi against Meghalaya, a score that underlined his capacity to build a major innings. Earlier in 2026, he turned out for West Delhi Lions in two Delhi Premier League fixtures, though he managed only 24 runs across those appearances, making the Vinoo Mankad Trophy a timely opportunity to reassert himself.

What has Aaryavir Sehwag reflected on after the Australia series?

After the Youth ODI series concluded, Aaryavir acknowledged that he had not been able to turn his promising starts into the kind of substantial scores his talent suggests he is capable of. He also spoke about the importance of approaching an innings in distinct phases as a method for constructing longer knocks, identifying this as a key area he wants to develop further.

That focus on building beyond the initial stages of an innings will carry added weight now that he holds the captaincy. Leading Delhi in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy from October 8 in Visakhapatnam gives him the platform to demonstrate both individual growth and the leadership qualities the DDCA have recognised in him. For the young batter, the tournament represents the next significant step in a career that has already included a near-triple hundred at junior level and a debut in a senior city franchise competition.
