Australia clinched the three-match ODI series 2-0 after defeating India by two wickets in the second ODI at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday. Chasing 265, the hosts crossed the line in 46.2 overs, thanks to an unbeaten 61 off 53 balls from Cooper Connolly, who guided the chase after Matthew Short’s 74. Earlier, India managed 264/9 after being put in to bat. Rohit Sharma top-scored with 73, while Shreyas Iyer added 61, but the visitors kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Adam Zampa was the pick of the bowlers with 4/60, while Xavier Bartlett chipped in with three wickets. Despite losing a few wickets towards the end, Connolly and Mitchell Owen (36 off 23) ensured Australia went over the line. 


Top batting performances of the match — Cooper Connolly

Cooper Connolly delivered a match-winning performance in Adelaide, guiding Australia to a thrilling two-wicket victory over India. Chasing 265, Connolly remained unbeaten on 61 off 53 balls with five fours and a six. His approach ensured India never found a way back into the contest. While Matt Short’s 74 gave Australia a solid start, it was Connolly’s efforts under pressure that sealed the deal and clinched the series 2-0 for the hosts. The young left-hander scored his maiden ODI fifty, lacing his innings with five fours and one six.


Best bowling spells — Adam Zampa

Leg spinner Adam Zampa was Australia’s standout performer with the ball at Adelaide. Zampa finished with figures of 4 for 60 in his 10 overs. He dismissed Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, breaking India’s momentum. With this performance, Zampa surpassed Steve Waugh to become Australia’s seventh-highest wicket-taker in ODIs, with 196 scalps in 115 matches. His efforts restricted India to 264/9.

Rohit Sharma becomes India's third-highest ODI run-scorer:

Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma added another record to his illustrious career. With a boundary off Adam Zampa in the 21st over, Rohit went past Sourav Ganguly’s tally of 11,221 runs to become India’s third-highest run-scorer in ODIs. The 37-year-old achieved the feat in his 275th ODI, as Sachin Tendulkar (18,426) and Virat Kohli (14,181) are the only ones to stand ahead of him on the list. Rohit also surpassed Ganguly to become India’s highest run-scorer as an opener in ODIs, taking his tally beyond 9,195 runs. His innings of 73 off 97 balls, laced with seven boundaries and two sixes, saw him regain his form. 

Rohit Sharma becomes the first Indian to score 1000 ODI runs against Aussies in Australia:

Apart from surpassing Ganguly, Rohit Sharma also became the first Indian batter to score 1,000 ODI runs against Australia on their home soil. He reached this feat with a boundary off Mitchell Starc. In 21 matches, the right-hander has now scored 1,071 runs at an average of 56.36, including four centuries and three fifties. The milestone puts him ahead of Virat Kohli (802 runs) in India-Australia ODIs played in Australia. 

Who was the Player of the Match?

Australian spinner Adam Zampa was awarded the Player of the Match for his spell of 4 for 60 in 10 overs. The leggie got the better of Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, making sure the visitors didn't dominate the middle overs. His efforts helped the hosts restrict India to 264/9 and eventually win the game.

Unforgettable moments from AUS vs IND, 2nd ODI

Star Indian batter Virat Kohli registered consecutive ODI ducks for the first time i his long career. After an eight-ball duck in Perth, the former India captain was trapped leg-before by Xavier Bartlett for a four-ball duck in the second ODI at Adelaide Oval. Walking back, Kohli acknowledged the crowd by raising his gloves, a gesture that sparked retirement rumours, as this could be his final appearance in Australia. Despite his struggles, the Adelaide crowd gave him a standing ovation at what Kohli has often called his favourite ground.


What is the next match?

After winning the first two fixtures of the three-match series, the hosts have sealed the series and currently lead the three-match series 2-0. With the series result already finalized, the Aussies will look to complete a clean sweep. For the Men in Blue, they will look to salvage their pride. The third ODI is scheduled for Saturday, October 25, at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.
