AUS vs IND 2025: BCCI to discuss Rohit Sharma's ODI captaincy future in selection meeting
Rohit has already retired from T20Is and Tests.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to discuss Rohit Sharma's future as ODI captain on October 4 during their squad selection meeting for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia. Rohit has already retired from T20Is and Tests.
One of the central themes of the meeting is set to be Rohit's long-term future in the 50-over setup: both as captain and player. It is understood, as per Cricbuzz, that the selection committee also plan on addressing the topic with Rohit on an in-person basis. Rohit recently cleared his fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru a few weeks back.
Rohit, who is already 38, will be 40 by the time the World Cup in South Africa is played in 2027. Age seems to be a factor which the BCCI will consider and it remains to be seen whether or not Rohit will stay in the management's plans even as a player, let alone the captain.
Meanwhile, most of the players from the 2025 Champions Trophy-winning squad are expected to be picked for the ODI leg of the series, including the likes of Rohit and Virat Kohli. This also means that Shreyas Iyer is likely to retain his place in the 50-over unit.
However, the question which remains is whether Iyer will return to the T20I side as well. Since the selectors can pick more than 15 players for bilateral series unlike major tournaments, there should be places for Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal. For the unversed, both of them could not make it to the Asia Cup 2025 squad.
BCCI set to include Rohit, Kohli in ODI squad vs Australia
India will play three ODIs followed by five T20Is against Australia Down Under. The limited-overs series is scheduled to get underway on Sunday, October 19, at the Perth Stadium. Australia have yet not announced their squad too.
