Former South Africa international AB de Villiers was in complete awe of young batter Dewald Brevis and opined that Chennai Super Kings were quite lucky to onboard him as an injury replacement during the Indian Premier League (IPL)'s 2025 season. These words from de Villiers came after Brevis hit a scintillating 56-ball 125 in the second T20I of the ongoing series against Australia.

AB de Villiers was following the breathtaking display with the bat from Brevis live, and could not hold himself back from showering praises for the promising batter, who took on a quality bowling attack like Australia to notch up his maiden century in the format. The batter, who played for CSK in IPL 2025, turned de Villiers into a fan, and the latter said that the five-time champions hit a jackpot by bringing the batter into their set-up for the 18th edition.

"There was such a golden opportunity for IPL teams to pick up Dewald Brevis at the auction! Missed out badly. CSK either got very lucky, or maybe the biggest master stroke ever👏 The boy can play," the former cricketer wrote in his appreciation on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Coming to the match, South Africa batted first at the Marrara Oval in Darwin, coming into the contest on the back of a 0-1 margin in the three-match series. The Proteas had a decent start, but the fall of wickets too was regular. That is when Brevis stepped in and wasted no time in finding gaps for plenty of runs. He was also involved in a mammoth 126-run partnership with Tristan Stubbs, as the duo stood tall before the fall of fourth wicket in the innings.

Brevis reached the three-figure mark off just 41 deliveries, and remained unbeaten till the last ball of the innings. Batting at a thunderous strike-rate of 223.21, the 22-year-old smashed his first-ever century at the international arena. He hit a tally of 12 boundaries and eight huge sixes during his stay at the crease, as the Proteas were able to post 218 for the loss of seven wickets at the end of the first innings.

With such an astonishing display with the bat, it will be interesting to see if CSK retain the Johannesburg-born ahead of the 2026 season, as the mini auction is not too far away.
