‘Ayush has a very calm head on his shoulders’ – Omkar Salvi on Mhatre leading India U-19 for England tour
Ayush Mhatre was recently appointed as India Under-19's captain for the England tour.
Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) recent new opener Ayush Mhatre is all set to lead the young U-19 Indian team in the upcoming England series. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has named Mhatre as the skipper of the team for five one-day matches and two unofficial Tests in England, following his incredible performance in the ongoing IPL 2025.
The 17-year-old was a mid-season purchase for CSK and has performed brilliantly. Before playing in the IPL, he was part of the Asia Cup last year. Now, the Mumbai-based cricketer has gained a reputation as a brilliant top-order batter, thanks to the way he has showcased himself in the IPL.
Speaking about the player, Mumbai's head coach, Omkar Salvi, applauded his talent and how calmly he handles his game. The coach is quite pleased with Mhatre's performance and also mentioned that he is a “self-assured team man.”
"Ayush Mhatre is a lovely kid who has got a very calm head on his shoulders. Being around him in the dressing room gave me the feeling that he is someone who can definitely be a leader. He's very confident of himself and also a self-assured team man, and that is going to keep this India Under-19 team in good stead," said Mumbai men's head coach Omkar Salvi.

Ayush Mhatre's performance in IPL 2025
Chennai Super Kings batter Ayush Mhatre came in as a surprise for the opposition. He was brought in as a replacement for captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow injury. Following that, Mhatre’s performance in the tournament has been outstanding.
He provided the much-needed start that the team had lacked before his signing. In six matches, the player has scored 206 runs at an average of 34.33, batting at a strike rate of 187.27. The Super Kings will look to groom him in the upcoming seasons, as there is a lot of potential in the young batter.
