Bangladesh Premier League unlikely to be held this year: Tamim Iqbal

Bangladesh Cricket Board President Tamim Iqbal has indicated that the Bangladesh Premier League may not see the 2026-27 edition taking place. The franchise-based T20 tournament, which traditionally takes place in the December-January window, faces significant obstacles before the board will commit to staging it again. The BCB chief has made clear that financial sustainability and operational excellence are non-negotiable conditions for the event's future.

Tamim ruled out rushing into the next edition of the tournament, emphasising that the BPL will only proceed if it can be organised to the required standard. The board has engaged with franchise representatives to address underlying problems, including payment structures and financial guarantees. These discussions reflect the BCB's commitment to resolving systemic issues before committing to another edition.

"I have said it a few times that I don’t want to organise BPL this way. One thing has to be said again. In one tournament, for the last two years, BCB has incurred losses of around 40 crore taka," Tamim told reporters as quoted by The Daily Star.

Financial losses prompt postponement

The financial losses have prompted the board to reassess the tournament's viability in its current form. Franchise cricket is intended to generate revenue for the board, not deplete its resources. The BCB chief has made it clear that structural and financial issues must be resolved before the next edition can proceed.

"Franchise cricket is supposed to make money for the Bangladesh Cricket Board, not lose money, so there is something going wrong. So until and unless we fix the issues, it is not absolutely important for us to host this event every year," the former Bangladesh batter explained.

BCB's commitment to resolving structural issues

Despite the postponement, the BCB has not ruled out staging the tournament in future seasons. The board remains committed to the BPL concept but is unwilling to proceed without addressing the underlying problems that have caused consecutive financial losses.

"Do we have the intention to do it? Hundred per cent. Do I want to rush it? Absolutely not," the legendary cricketer added.

The decision reflects a pragmatic approach to tournament management rather than a permanent abandonment of the franchise format.
