'Bhuvneshwar is not someone who is going to sit and moan about it' - Dinesh Karthik's big remark on changes in India playing XI for 4th T20I
Dinesh Karthik has backed Bhuvneshwar Kumar to bounce back after the pacer was left out of India's fourth T20I against New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland, on October 30.
At Eden Park in Auckland on October 30, India made two changes to their squad for the fourth T20I against New Zealand. Mayank Yadav returned to the bowling attack in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, while Ishan Kishan came back after missing the previous two matches due to a low-grade right adductor strain.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's performance across three outings had raised concerns. The pacer took one wicket while conceding 139 runs in 12 overs at an economy rate of 11.58, with figures of 0 for 49, 1 for 50 and 0 for 40 in successive matches. This prompted the selection change ahead of the fourth encounter against the Kiwis.
Dinesh Karthik acknowledged the difficult position Bhuvneshwar Kumar found himself in after the omission. Speaking about the pacer's situation, Karthik weighed the merits of persisting with experience against the reality of recent form.
"Personally, I would have persisted with him, knowing the pedigree he has. We don't know whether he is being rested and the bowlers are being rotated or whether he has been dropped. If he has been dropped, you can understand. He has played three games, bowled 12 overs, and it has not gone according to the plan. He sets lofty standards for himself, and I don't think he has bowled up to the standards that he usually does," Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
What did Dinesh Karthik say about Bhuvneshwar Kumar's performance?
What Bhuvneshwar Kumar's response would matter most to Karthik. The former India wicketkeeper-batter expressed confidence in the pacer's character and resilience, particularly given his track record in franchise cricket.
"He is not someone who is going to sit and moan about it. He will take it on his chin. Knowing him, he will come back stronger. If this means he is not a part of the squad from here on, then that is quite hard. I do feel that, with the kind of success he has shown and the consistency he has shown in a premier tournament like the IPL, he will warrant a few more chances; he deserves a few more chances, and when he gets those, I have no doubt that he will show the world how good he is," Karthik said.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to international cricket marked a significant milestone after nearly four years away from the Indian side. Mayank Yadav, who had featured in the first T20I in Christchurch before being replaced by Prince Yadav, earned another opportunity to prove himself in the fourth match at Eden Park.
