The British Police have made 12 more arrests in connection with the Leicestershire communal clashes, which erupted late in August this year following the match between India and Pakistan. It is understood that the very first arrest was made on December 8 when a person was suspected of violent disorder in relation to an incident in Harewood Street, Leicestershire, on May 22, 2022.

The Leicestershire Police further provided an update that over 47 arrests were made and now a further 12 men were arrested with some charged with offences relating to a number of disorder offences. Inspector Rob Arthur, who is leading the force’s investigating team shared the fresh update on the arrests made on the incident.

“We’ve been working hard behind the scene reviewing the CCTV footage and all the hours of body-worn video from officers who were working and making IDs of those who may be involved,” said Detective Chief Inspector Rob Arthur as quoted by India Today.

“This work has led us to be able to make these arrests and bring these people into custody in order to get their accounts. It’s work that has taken time, due to the nature of it, and it’s work we’ll be continuing to carry out,” he added.

Incident occurred post the Asia Cup match between IND-PAK

The communal violence took place in the wake of the India-Pakistan Asia Cup 2022 match in Dubai at the end of August. Groups of men believed to be largely from the local Hindu and Muslim communities had clashed post the contest between the arch-rivals.

Following the unrest caused, the Indian High Commission in London issued a statement to condemn the violence that erupted in Leicestershire.

“Strongly condemn the violence perpetrated against the Indian community in Leicester and vandalisation of premises and symbols of Hindu religion,” told the HC in London.
