CWC 2023: Rahmat Shah's one-handed stunner leaves crowd awestruck in BAN vs AFG game

Bangladesh began their World Cup 2023 campaign with a win against Afghanistan by six wickets on Saturday, October 07 at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the star of the show for Bangladesh as he picked 3/25 with the ball first and later scored 57 (73) with the bat.

While Afghanistan didn’t have many memorable moments on the pitch, a stunning catch from Rahmat Shah to dismiss Mehidy Hasan Miraz became the highlight of the match. During the 29th over of the second innings, Bangladesh were running away with the game as Mehidy and Najmul Hossain Shanto added 97 runs for the third wicket.

On the first ball of the over bowled by Naveen-ul-Haq, Mehidy tried to smack him over mid-off. However, Rahmat Shah jumped to his full height to pluck the ball out of thin air and completed a spectacular catch. The acrobatic effort brought everyone to the edge of their seats as the crowd was left awestruck by his effort.

Afghanistan suffered a dramatic collapse after a strong start

Coming back to the match, after bring put in to bat first, Afghanistan got off to a great start as openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (47 off 62) and Ibrahim Zadran (22 off 25) added 47 runs for the first wicket. They were further going strong at 112/2 after 24.3 overs with Gurbaz and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi at the crease. However, the duo got dismissed in back-to-back overs by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mustafizur Rahman and Afghanistan were reduced to 112/4.

Following the end of the partnership, Afghanistan suffered a dramatic collapse as they were bundled out for just 156 in 37.2 overs. In reply, Bangladesh chased down the target in 34.4 overs as Mehidy Hasan Miraz (57 off 73) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (59 off 83) stitched a crucial stand of 97 runs off 129 balls for the second wicket. Mehidy Hasan was derservedly awarded Player of the Match for his all round show.
