On June 16, the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court imposed a travel ban on former Bangladesh cricket captain and Member of Parliament, Shakib Al Hasan, along with 14 others. The order was issued by Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib, following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The travel ban was requested as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of large-scale embezzlement involving hundreds of crores of Bangladeshi taka from the country’s share market through various forms of corruption.

The other accused are Deputy Registrar of the Department of Cooperatives Abul Khair, his wife Kazi Sadia Hassan, Abul Kalam Matbar, Kanoka Afroz, Mohammad Bashar, Sajed Matbar, Aleya Begum, Kazi Fuad Hassan, Kazi Farid Hassan, Shirin Akhter, Javed A Matin, Zahed Kamal, Humayun Kabir and Tanvir Nizam.

The Deputy Director (Public Relations) Aktarul Islam at ACC headquarters mentioned the commission received confidential intelligence suggesting the accused individuals might attempt to flee the country to evade investigation. The ACC therefore urged the court to impose the travel restrictions, reported BSS News.

Shakib stands as one of Bangladesh’s cricketing legends, scoring over 14,000 runs and scalping 700 wickets in international cricket. He was the first Bangladeshi to achieve the double of 2,000 runs and 100 wickets in ODIs and remains the only bowler from the country with over 300 ODI wickets.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh is set to face Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series starting June 17 in Galle. The opening Test marks the beginning of the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle. They finished seventh in the previous WTC cycle (2023–25) with four wins from 12 matches, and will aim to start the new campaign on a strong note.
