‘Don’t make massive changes’ - Yuvraj Singh's suggestion to Team India before World Cup year

Yuvraj Singh, the Player of the Series from India's 2011 ODI World Cup triumph, has urged Team India to maintain squad stability as the nation prepares for the 2027 World Cup in Africa. The 44-year-old former all-rounder believes that building consistency in the playing XI will be crucial for India's success in the tournament scheduled for October 2027.

Yuvraj stressed the importance of avoiding sudden changes to the squad composition. He highlighted how India's recent success across white-ball formats has been built on player continuity and belief in the team's core group.

"They need to focus on building the same team to play in a year's time, because you don't want to make big changes at the last moment," Yuvraj told Cricinfo.

Why squad continuity matters for World Cup success

Yuvraj emphasised that maintaining belief in the selected squad, regardless of short-term results, would be vital for India's World Cup campaign. He noted that every time India have faltered is when they have made some massive changes at the last moment or in the tournament.

Player consistency has powered India to four finals across white-ball formats since 2023, showing the value of sticking with a core group through both success and setback.

Giving regular game time to all squad members is essential given the current international cricket calendar. With T20 cricket dominating the schedule and fewer ODI matches being played, players need sufficient opportunities to prepare specifically for the 50-over format.

"Whoever your players are, whether they are 16 or 20, it's important that everybody gets game time because obviously now there's more T20s and less 50-over cricket. Whatever matches there are, it's important that players get enough game time to prepare for the World Cup," Yuvraj said.

Game time crucial in the current cricket calendar

India's recent record in white-ball cricket underscores the value of squad continuity. The team won the T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, claimed the Champions Trophy title last year and reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, finishing as runners-up. These achievements across multiple tournaments demonstrate how consistent selection and player faith have delivered results.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel now faces critical decisions as India embarks on its World Cup preparation. The team's long road to the 2027 tournament began with a three-match ODI series at home against West Indies starting September 27. Questions surrounding the international future of former captain Rohit Sharma remain a focal point for selectors and observers.
