India captain Shubman Gill continued his stellar run of form in red-ball cricket to notch up his maiden double hundred in Tests, which came against England in the ongoing second Test of the five-match series at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The ace batter took 311 balls to reach the important landmark in his young career as a Test batter for the Indian team.

Gill also became only the third Indian to hit a double century in England, joining the likes of legendary Sunil Gavaskar (221 at The Oval, London in 1979) and Rahul Dravid (217 at The Oval, London in 2002). The 25-year-old hit 21 fours and a couple of huge sixes in the process of accomplishing the milestone that helped India establish their dominance in the game after suffering a disappointing loss in the previous encounter at Headingley, Leeds as they lost by five wickets on the final day of the Test.

The individual achievement also comes as a promising start to his numbers as India's Test captain. In just three innings as the leader of the pack, this is Gill's second triple-digit score which will exude a lot of confidence in the dug out and for the selection committee as well. It may also be said that moving to No. 4 a demotion in his batting order from No. 3 previously, has worked wonders for the Fazilka-born.

Gill came in to bat at a crucial juncture of the game where the visitors had lost Karun Nair with just 95 runs on the board, resulting in the fall of the second wicket. After continuing to score from his end despite wickets falling at the other end at regular intervals, Ravindra Jadeja became the perfect companion to Gill. The duo put on 203 runs for the sixth wicket, which was extremely crucial as things looks critical at one point. Jadeja departed just short of his century, but not before putting his team back on track for a big first inning's total.

At the time of writing, Gill had already reached 222*, which is now the highest score by an Indian batter, playing in the United Kingdom, going past Gavaskar 221 which came against the same opposition over four decades ago.

Meanwhile, X was buzzing with praises for Shubman Gill after his magnificent knock on Day 2 in Birmingham

First Indian Captain to score 200 on the English soil. Determination in Shubman Gill’s eyes was quite evident. From charming strokes to solid defence everything was there in this special inning

Shubman Gill's unbeaten 200* against England in Birmingham, 2025, puts him alongside Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid as the only Indians to score a Test double century in England, cementing his status as a torchbearer of India's batting future. Congratulations, Skipper!
