On Tuesday, April 25, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's squad for the upcoming World Test Championship final and it has witnessed the return of veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane.
Notably, the 34-year-old was dropped from the squad in January 2022 and was subsequently released from the BCCI contract. However, the Mumbai-born cricketer ground hard in the Ranji Trophy after his exclusion and has got back into the mix.
Reflecting on the same, cricketer-turned-broadcaster Aakash Chopra has stated that he is very happy to see Rahane making a comeback but also pointed out the exit of Suryakumar Yadav from the squad. Notably, Suryakumar Yadav was part of the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy but has been suddenly dropped without an extended run.
“Happy for Rahane. But how does the SKY inclusion-exclusion make sense?? Select kyon kiya…kar liya toh ek match ke baad drop kyon kiya? (Why did you select him in the first place.. Since you did, why did you drop him after just one match?” Chopra tweeted.
Meanwhile, in the latest Ranji Trophy season, Rahane scored 634 runs in just seven matches. Based on his form in red-ball cricket and also because of his ongoing purple patch in the ongoing IPL, the former vice-captain has got back into the squad. Notably, in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, it is very likely that Rahane will get into the playing XI in the WTC final against Australia.
When it comes to Suryakumar Yadav, he made his Test debut in the Nagpur Test against Australia but couldn’t make any significant impact. He got dismissed for eight and later, never got another opportunity to prove himself. Just like Suryakumar, Ishan Kishan too has been dropped from the Test squad. He was also part of the Test series against Australia and has been dropped.
