Harmanpreet Kaur receives heartfelt tributes from Shafali Verma, IPL franchises
Players and teams pay tribute after the 37-year-old steps down as captain across all formats.
Harmanpreet Kaur announced her decision to step down as captain of the Indian women's cricket team across all formats on October 6, 2026. The 37-year-old made the announcement through an emotional Instagram post but confirmed that she will continue playing for India. The development followed a review meeting conducted by the BCCI in Guwahati, where Harmanpreet met with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, alongside vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar.
Harmanpreet's captaincy tenure was marked by significant achievements for Indian women's cricket. She led India to victory in the 2025 Women's Cricket World Cup and guided the team to the Asian Games gold medal in September 2026. In July 2026, under her leadership, India secured a 270-run victory against England in the first-ever women's Test match at Lord's, a historic milestone for the team.
"Since the day I made my debut, you've always been there for me, on and off the field. From guiding me through the early days to standing by me through everything, I've always known I could count on you," Shafali Verma was quoted as saying by rediff.
The young batter reflected on her journey under Harmanpreet's captaincy, acknowledging the personal and professional support she received throughout her time in the team.

Shafali Verma recognised Harmanpreet's broader influence on the sport and the squad's development during her tenure as captain. The opening batter had played under Harmanpreet's leadership since her international debut and witnessed firsthand the transformation of the team under her guidance.
"Harman di, your contribution to Indian women's cricket is something that will always be remembered. You've led us through some incredible moments and helped shape the team we are today. Thank you for everything, captain," Shafali added.
IPL franchises honour Harmanpreet's legacy
Multiple IPL franchises recognised Harmanpreet's role in elevating women's cricket in India through their own tributes. Punjab Kings, one of the franchises competing in the Women's Premier League, was among the first to acknowledge her impact on the sport beyond the international stage.
Punjab Kings posted on social media: "A legacy built on courage and class! Thank you, Skipper!"
Mumbai Indians, the franchise Harmanpreet led to two WPL titles, shared their own tribute.
"Led from the front. Fought with heart. Inspired a generation. Thank you for the legacy, Kaptaan Kaur."
