Team India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey disagreed with the observation that the side is unable to defend totals. Contrary to the observations, he added that the team has defended scores efficiently in numerous outings.

This comes after India conceded 337 runs in the first ODI against New Zealand after the home side posted a mammoth total of 349 runs. Speaking ahead of the second ODI match, Mhambrey backed the Indian bowling unit over their inability to swiftly conclude the match by dismissing the rival side.

“I don’t agree with the observation that we don’t defend well. We have defended scores in a lot of games. Such games will keep happening. The surface (in Hyderabad) was really good. We made 350, and were also expecting them to score,” told Mhambrey in a press conference.

“The good thing is we won the game and learnt a lot from it. We will look to implement the same in the upcoming match. We noticed a few things and we will definitely try to improve on it,” he added.

Bumrah’s unavailability gives other bowlers a chance to make a mark: Mhambrey

Just when the Indian bowling unit faces the heat, the side usually turns to pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah to execute a rescue job. However, with the absence of the pacer due to an injury, Mhambrey added that his unavailability gives chances to others in the squad to perform.

“(Jasprit) Bumrah is a unique bowler in the world. He is irreplaceable. Let’s accept the fact that it is very difficult to replicate the skills that he brings. But it gives us an opportunity to test other players and see how they perform under pressure. We are constantly discussing on how to improve,” added the bowling coach.

Team India will be on the lookout to clinch the three-match ODI series against New Zealand on January 21 in Raipur. The home side currently has the lead 1-0 after emerging victorious in the thriller of a contest in the first ODI in Hyderabad.
