Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar wants Chennai Super Kings to give another chance to Ravindra Jadeja as the leader of the locker room. Notably, the star all-rounder was appointed as the skipper of the CSK team in IPL 2022 but the 34-year-old couldn’t really impress and was dropped from the role mid-season.
Later on, MS Dhoni once again took charge of the proceedings while it was reported by several media outlets that Jadeja might leave CSK ahead of IPL 2023.
However, that didn’t happen as he is once again playing a key role for the four-time champions in the ongoing season. With that, Gavaskar commented that captaining a side is never easy but given Jadeja’s experience, he can be an excellent fit. He also opined that Ruturaj Gaikwad should be appointed as the next vice-captain in order to keep him ready as the future captain of CSK.
“I would give Ravindra Jadeja another go. He could have not been at his best last year. Captaincy is not easy, he might have found it tough last time, now he is experienced, and now he has come back. I would give Ravi Jadeja another go at captaincy. I would have Ruturaj Gaikwad as vice-captain so that you are already building up for the future. Ravi Jadeja is 30 or 31 now, so you are building your line of succession,” Gavaskar said to Star Sports.
Aaron Finch wants Gaikwad as next CSK skipper
Even though Gavaskar prefers Jadeja at the moment, former Australia skipper Aaron Finch believes that Ruturaj Gaikwad will be the perfect choice as the next CSK skipper as there’s a sense of calmness in the opener.
“The calmness of Ruturaj Gaikwad, the way he goes about his game. But there is that calmness, that such a huge part of being a leader, being there for everybody else and not just for you. That's a big part. I would want him,” Finch mentioned.
Notably, the Pune-born cricketer has prior experience of captaincy as he has led Maharashtra multiple times in domestic cricket. Under his leadership, Maharashtra also qualified for the finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2022 but unfortunately lost to Saurashtra by five wickets.
