ICC announces 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier dates

The ICC has confirmed that the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier will take place from February 22 to March 23, 2027. Ten teams will compete for spots at the main event, which runs from October 4 to November 21, 2027, across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The ICC announced the revamped 2027 World Cup structure in July 2026, and the Qualifier sits at the centre of the pathway for teams outside the automatic qualification bracket.

The governing body has finalised the tournament window but is yet to announce a host venue for the Qualifier. The 10-team field will be assembled from three separate streams, the two lowest-ranked Full Members outside of South Africa and Zimbabwe at the September 30, 2026 ODI rankings cutoff, the top four finishers from CWC League 2; and the top four teams from the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

How does the Qualifier Playoff pathway work?

The World Cup Qualifier Playoff draws its participants from two levels of the qualification structure. The four teams that finish at the bottom of CWC League 2 enter the Playoff alongside four sides that emerge from the Challenge League. The ICC has not yet decided on a format for the Qualifier Playoff.

The Challenge League operates with 12 teams split across two pools of six. Each pool runs through three separate round-robin tournaments, and the top two finishers from each pool earn a place in the World Cup Qualifier Playoff. That gives four Challenge League teams a route into the 10-team Qualifier, making the Challenge League the entry point for the broadest range of associate nations in this cycle.

What does qualification from the Qualifier mean for each team?

The team that wins the 10-team Qualifier earns direct entry into the main 14-team World Cup group stage, which is the clearest route to the tournament available through this pathway. Teams that finish second, third and fourth enter the Super Series first round, where the top finisher from that stage secures a berth in the main 12-team stage of the World Cup.

West Indies are among the Full Members whose position in the qualification structure remains uncertain ahead of the September 30, 2026 cutoff. Currently ranked 10th, the Caribbean side have two ODIs against India in September before that deadline.

West Indies were absent from the 2023 ODI World Cup after a Super Over defeat to the Netherlands in the 2023 Qualifier in Harare, and their final ranking will determine whether they enter as an automatic qualifier or must go through this Qualifier. Should Ireland defeat Afghanistan 4-1 or 5-0 in their ongoing series, a pair of victories for West Indies against India could lift them into the top eight, an Afghanistan series win would make it considerably harder for West Indies to avoid the qualifying route.
