I’m absolutely shattered, heartbroken: Nathan Lyon

Nathan Lyon became the sixth player to feature in 100 consecutive Test matches when he was picked for the second Ashes Test at the 'Home of Cricket'. However, the ace off-spinner suffered a devastating calf strain while fielding on Day 2.

Lyon was seen walking with the help of crutches on Day 3, and the Australian team informed that the 35-year-old's injury will be further assessed after the completion of the Lord's Test and, subsequently, a decision on his availability for the remainder of the series will be taken. As things stand, things are not looking very promising for the reliable Aussie bowler, at least from the outside.

Lyon opened up on his disappointment after suffering the injury as he said that it was a dream for him to win the Ashes in England.

"I’m absolutely shattered, heartbroken," Lyon told SEN Cricket.

"Speechless is probably the best way to put it. I had a dream to win an Ashes series over here, I’ve said it publicly, privately, and everything else."

Nathan Lyon shocked the cricket world when he hobbled out to bat at No. 11 for Australia on Day 4. Even the English cricketers applauded the veteran for his show of courage. Lyon added 15 runs with Mitchell Starc that could prove to be crucial in the end for the visitors. Lyon revealed that skipper Pat Cummins told him not to go out to bat with the injury.

"Pat originally said to wake up to myself, that I’m not going out there. But I had a chat to Andrew McDonald and our medical team and tried to find a way that I could figure out how to go about it," Lyon said.

The star bowler looked in excruciating pain when he was facing up to the English bowlers. He denied taking any credit for his efforts and said that he was just doing his job of supporting his teammates. Lyon also mentioned that he will have no problem doing it again if the situation arises.

"I was just going out there and trying to do my role. There’s a lot of talk about my innings but I went out there to support my teammates. That’s what I do, and I’d do it again tomorrow. That’s just part of it."

England will begin Day 5 on 114/4 with captain Ben Stokes and opener Ben Duckett at the crease. They still require 257 runs for victory.
