India returned to the top of the ICC men's T20I rankings on September 22, 2026, after defeating Japan by 2 runs in a rain-curtailed five-over-per-side match at Sano International Cricket Ground. The result lifted India back above England, who had moved to the summit just two days earlier following a whitewash of Sri Lanka in a three-match series.

Typhoon Dujuan brought persistent rain and a wet outfield to Sano, forcing match officials to cut the contest to five overs per side. India posted 32 for four in their allocation on a rank turner. Japan chose to bowl exclusively through spinners across all five overs, keeping India in check, but could not reach the target in their own innings and fell 2 runs short. Shreyas Iyer was named Player of the Match for his small but important contribution with the bat.

The revised format did not affect the match's official status. It retained full T20I standing and the result was counted in the ICC rankings update. On-field umpires Chris Brown and Chris Thurgate, along with match referee Narayanan Kutty, oversaw the proceedings throughout.

The updated standings show India at the top with a rating of 269, accumulated across 65 matches for a total of 17,480 points. England share the same rating of 269 but hold only 11,021 points from 41 matches, leaving India ahead on the overall points tally.

Why was the India vs Japan T20I reduced to five overs?

Typhoon Dujuan was directly responsible for the disruption at Sano International Cricket Ground. The storm brought incessant rainfall and left the outfield too wet for a full twenty-over contest to be staged safely. Match officials assessed conditions and determined that a five-over-per-side format was the maximum feasible option on the day.

Japan's tactical decision to rely entirely on spin bowling throughout their five-over allocation stood out as a notable choice given the surface and conditions. India's total of 32 for four was modest but ultimately proved sufficient, with Japan's batters unable to overhaul the target inside their own five overs.

What was the context behind the India vs Japan fixture?

The match was staged under the Suzuki Cup banner, a series organised to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. It was also the first time the two nations had met in an international cricket fixture, giving the occasion historic significance at Sano International Cricket Ground.

Both sides were using the fixture as final preparation ahead of the Asian Games 2026, scheduled to take place in Aichi-Nagoya. For India, the victory carried an added dimension beyond the bilateral context, restoring their position at the top of the ICC men's T20I rankings after England had briefly held the number one spot.
