India and Australia are locking horns in the first ODI of the three-match series on Friday, September 22 at Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. Indian captain KL Rahul won the toss and invited Australia to bat first on a good batting track. The Pat Cummins-led side didn’t get off to a good start as Mohammad Shami dismissed Mitchell Marsh in the first over itself to bring Australia on the backfoot early on.

However, after the early blow, David Warner (52 off 53) and Steve Smith (41 off 60) stitched a 94-run stand for the second wicket to stabilise the innings. The partnership was finally broken by Ravindra Jadeja who dismissed David Warner by getting him caught at deep mid-wicket.

Shami returned in the attack once again and dismantled the stumps of Smith to give third blow to Australia. The right-arm seamer bowled a beautiful in-swinger that sharply nipped back into the Australian batter and smashed into his stumps.

Further ahead in the innings, a bizarre dismissal was witnessed as Marnus Labuschagne got out stumped. The Australian batter got an edge trying to reverse sweep Ravichandran Ashwin, however, India wicketkeeper KL Rahul failed to collect the ball as it hit it pads and ricocheted onto the stumps. Much to Labuschagne’s dismay, he was found short of the crease when the ball made contact with the stumps and was adjudged stumped. Notably, it was also Ashwin’s first wicket on his ODI comeback after 21 months.

Shami registers his best ODI figures

Australia were looking for a good finish at 248/5 after 46.4 overs but their plans were shattered by Shami who picked up the second five-wicket haul of his career. The 33-year-old finished his spell with his best ever figures of 5/51 in ten overs to bundle out Australia for 276.

Apart from Shami, Jasprit Bumrah (1/43), Ravichandran Ashwin (1/47), and Ravindra Jadeja (1/51) were also among the wickets. Meanwhile, India have got off to a good start in the chase as they were 68/0 after 11 overs with Ruturaj Gaikwad (33* off 39) and Shubman Gill (33* off 27) at the crease.
