In a setback for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing IPL 2024 season, star batter Devon Conway has been ruled out due to injury. The CSK camp has announced a replacement in the form of England pacer Richard Gleeson.

Conway, the New Zealand opener, has been a crucial asset for the Chennai-based franchise over the past two IPL seasons. His performances, which included 924 runs in 23 matches with nine half-centuries and a highest score of 92*, were instrumental in the team's success, helping it to lift the trophy in the 2023 season. However, an unfortunate injury has now ruled Conway out of the 2024 edition of the tournament.

CSK include Richard Gleeson in their squad

Recognizing the void left by Conway's absence, CSK have quickly moved to strengthen their squad by signing Gleeson as his replacement. Gleeson, an English fast bowler, has represented his national team in six T20Is and has an impressive track record in the T20 format, with 101 wickets in 90 matches.

The addition of Gleeson is expected to strengthen CSK's bowling attack, which has already shown promising signs in the early stages of the tournament. The team, currently third on the points table with eight points from six matches, has managed to maintain their momentum despite the loss of a key player like Conway.

Notably, CSK had acquired the services of Rachin Ravindra, Conway's fellow New Zealand teammate, during the auction. Ravindra has been paired with CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad at the top of the order, and the duo's performances will be crucial in the team's quest for continued success.

CSK will be facing Lucknow Super Giants in their next match on April 19 at Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The team management will have an interesting decision to make regarding the playing XI. They will need to choose between Gleeson, or the in-form Bangladesh bowler Mustafizur Rahman, whose availability may be in question due to national team commitments now and later.
