Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are continuing their dream run in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). They defeated Mumbai Indians by 18 runs to become the first team to qualify for the playoffs. They are bossing the points table with 18 points and now with two games left, they will be aiming to finish in the top two positions.
In a rain-hit encounter, MI had to chase down a target of 158 in 16 overs. Despite getting a good powerplay, their batters failed to keep up the momentum. The KKR bowlers kept picking up wickets and troubling their opposition. Already out of the tournament, Mumbai are now in the ninth position in the points table.

Powerplay 1: Overs 0.1 to 6.0 (Mandatory – 62 runs, 0 wickets)
Vaibhav Arora started brilliantly but Ishan Kishan managed to get a boundary on the fourth ball. Mitchell Starc conceded two boundaries in the second over to leak 11 runs. Kishan smashed Harshit Rana for two fours and a six in the fourth over.
Sunil Narine was brought inside the powerplay but the spin wizard was welcomed with a 13-run over. Despite Rohit's slow start, the keeper-batter's aggressive play helped MI post a superb Powerplay score of 62 runs. The players also took a strategic break.
Fabulous flick played with ease! 💙

First Wicket: MI 65/1 in 6.5 overs
Narine continued his attack and managed to get rid of dangerous Ishan Kishan right after the powerplay. The southpaw tried a slogsweep but was not timed well and the fielder at mid-wicket took a comfortable catch. Kishan’s quick-fire knock of 22-ball 40 came to an end.
2nd Strategic Timeout: Mumbai Indians - 88/3 in 11 overs (Hardik Pandya 1* off 1, Tilak Varma 9* off 6)
Rohit Sharma was looking clueless against spin and eventually, his sluggish knock of 24-ball 19 came to an end in the eighth over at the hands of Varun Chakaravarthy. MI lost both their openers in quick succession and that brought two new batters – Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma – to the crease.
Suryakumar has been in good form recently, but this time he failed to bring out his batting excellence. It was Andre Russell who gave the huge breakthrough for KKR. With the equation requiring 70 runs in the last five overs, the players of both teams split up for a strategic break.
Huge moment in the chase!

End of the match: Mumbai Indians – 139/8 in 16 overs
Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir gave KKR a late scare with some big hits. But that wasn’t enough for the five-time champions to get over the line. Harshit Rana bowled a brilliant final over by picking up two crucial wickets and defending 22 runs. He conceded just three runs and helped KKR win by 18 runs.
Joy at the Eden Gardens for the @KKRiders 💜
