IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals, Match 63 - Who Said What?
DC became the first team in IPL history to not qualify for the playoffs after winning each of their first four games.
Mumbai Indians registered a convincing 59-run victory against Delhi Capitals in Match 63 of IPL 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, May 21. This win secured their playoffs berth for the 11th time in IPL history.
Rohit Sharma fell early for a run-a-ball five before dismissals of Will Jacks (21 off 13) and Ryan Rickelton (25 off 18) left the home side at 80/3 at the halfway stage in their innings. Tilak Varma ended his struggle at the crease with a run-a-ball 27, however, Suryakumar Yadav and Naman Dhir plundered the opposition in the final couple of overs, scoring 48 runs combined, to end up unbeaten 73 off 43 and 24 off 8, respectively.
Coming to the chase, DC lost key wickets early as Faf du Plessis (six off seven), KL Rahul (11 off six), and Abishek Porel (six off nine) fell inside the powerplay. Mitchell Santner struck thrice in his four-over quota, ending DC’s hopes. Sameer Rizvi (39 off 35) top-scored for DC. They eventually ended up getting bowled out for 121 in 18.2 overs.
Talking Points
1. Tilak never takes flight
Tilak's 27 (27) knock entailed only one four and as many sixes. He struggled to get going in the middle. This was the third time this season Tilak struck at less than 130 after facing 25 or more balls in an innings.
2. Suryakumar lights up Wankhede
Suryakumar had only mustered 21 runs off his first 20 deliveries. However, he started accelerating from and ended unbeaten on 73 off only 43 to help MI post a winning total on the board.
3. Santner magic
Coming in for Corbin Bosch, Santner's influence in the second innings was significant on the opposition. His three-wicket haul comprised 16 dot balls in his four-over quota.
4. MI playoffs-bound for 11th time
MI confirmed their berth in the playoffs for the 11th time through a clinical finish. With their eighth win in the 13th game, they maintained their splendid record of getting to the top four of the league with a game to spare.
MEMES
Who Said What?
Faf du Plessis (losing captain)
We were excellent today on the field. The guys showed great fight. The bowlers pitched up, obviously not the easiest pitch to bat on, probably made the bowlers' job a little bit easier. Still, it's a very strong batting lineup and I thought we were excellent and then let it slip in the last two overs. Momentum is a real thing in cricket, the way they counterpunched to get almost 50 in the last two overs, all the hardwork that we did for 17-18 overs, we lost that momentum. If you looked at the two teams before today's fixture, it was a case of David and Goliath. I enjoy that because it gives guys the opportunity to really play together as a team. Credit to them, Rizvi today showed some signs, he's got some talent there. When you're playing against a powerful team like this, you need to be at your best all the time and unfortunately for 17-18 overs we were and then the last two overs we were pretty average. With the bat, we needed a good start on a surface like that and we didn't get going at all. Sums up pretty much our season, we've been cold in either batting or bowling in the last six-seven games. To be in the top-four in the IPL, you can't afford to do that.
Hardik Pandya (winning captain)
I can throw the ball whenever I want, they bring such control and perfection which makes my job very easy. We would've been very happy to get 160 but the way Naman and Surya finished it. Especially Naman, to come out and just hit on a dfficult track was outstanding.
Suryakumar Yadav (Player of the Match)
It's been 13 games now. My wife told me a sweet story today. She said you've got all the awards except MoM. This award is special today. From team's point of view the knock was important, and also this trophy is for her. She waits for such moments and we celebrate it obviously, looking forward to it. Was important for a single batter to bat till the end. We knew there was one over of 15-20 runs somewhere so we had to wait till the end. The way Naman came in and shared that energy with me was also a turning point.
