Ricky Ponting expressed his delight in welcoming Mitchell Owen to the Punjab Kings' (PBKS) squad after Glenn Maxwell was ruled out for the remainder of IPL 2025. The PBKS Head Coach informed the rest of the squad about Owen's capabilities as a player. Ponting spoke on behalf of everyone, expressing satisfaction with the addition of the emerging star to the PBKS squad.

The 2013 IPL winner described Owen as a highly impressive player and highlighted his performances in the Big Bash League (BBL) with the Hobart Hurricanes. Ponting mentioned that he has followed the emerging star closely over the last year. He also noted that PBKS's Assistant Coach, James Hopes, is well aware of Owen's potential, having worked with him at the Hurricanes.

"I think we’re all very happy to add Mitchell Owen to our squad for the back end of this season. He’s been really impressive in the BBL with the Hobart Hurricanes, someone that I’ve watched very closely, especially over the last 12 months. Our other assistant coach here, James Hopes, has worked with him at the Hurricanes," Ponting said, as quoted by News 18.

The former Australian skipper praised Owen's versatility, describing him as an exciting player who brings a well-rounded package to the team. Ponting noted that Owen can bat in multiple positions and also bowl effective medium pace, making him a valuable asset for PBKS. He expressed his eagerness to see Owen join the squad soon.

"He’s a very exciting player, a very exciting package. He is someone who can bat in lots of different positions in the order and can bowl some very handy medium pace as well, which will be really good for us. I’m really excited to have him as part of the group and looking forward to him getting over here sooner rather than later," Ponting added.

Mitchell Owen joins PBKS for INR 3 crores

Notably, Owen joined the 2014 champions for a price of INR 3 crores. The talented all-rounder has played 34 matches in T20 cricket, scoring 646 runs, including two centuries. With the ball, the medium pacer has claimed 10 wickets, further showcasing his ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game.
