Punjab Kings registered a thrilling five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in Match 7 of the Indian Premier League 2026 on Friday, April 3 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Batting first, CSK posted a formidable 209/5 in 20 overs, thanks to a superb knock from Ayush Mhatre, who scored 73 off 43 balls. He was well supported by Shivam Dube, who remained unbeaten on 45, as CSK finished strongly after a solid start.

In response, PBKS produced a composed and clinical chase. Skipper Shreyas Iyer led from the front with a fluent 50 off 29 balls, anchoring the innings during the crucial middle phase. The rest of the batting unit contributed effectively, ensuring the required rate never spiralled out of control.

Despite a couple of wickets from Anshul Kamboj, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side struggled to contain the flow of runs, especially in the latter stages. PBKS eventually chased down the 210-run target in just 18.4 overs, showcasing their batting depth and composure under pressure.

The convincing chase marked PBKS’ second successive win of the season, while the hosts were left to reflect on their inability to defend a strong total at home.

Key Moments from Match 7 of IPL 2026:

New Gen CSK batting shows its class.

Sanju Samson departed after scoring a mere seven runs. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, too, could not do much after scoring 28 in 22 balls. The CSK batting was carried by the new generation of CSK batters, especially Ayush Mhatre and Sarfaraz Khan.

Mhatre, who came in to bat at number 3, had a stellar outing against PBKS, scoring 73 runs in just 43 balls, including five handsome sixes. The finishing touch was given by Sarfaraz, who scored 32 in just 12 balls, including six fours and a six.

Experienced Shivam Dube, too, carried on his good form with an impactful knock of 45 runs. CSK posted a challenging total of 209 in 20 overs.

Punjabi openers come out all guns blazing

Chasing a mammoth total of 210 in 20 overs, PBKS needed a strong start from their openers, and they delivered exactly that. The young Indian duo of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh came all guns blazing in this chase. The left-right combination put on an epic opening stand of 61 runs in just 26 balls to put CSK bowlers on a backfoot. The result of this chase was more or less decided by this partnership.

Arya got dismissed after scoring 39 in just 11 balls, whereas Prabhsimran scored 43 runs.

Captain Shreyas Iyer takes the charge for PBKS

Coming in to bat at number 4, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer showed his class in this run chase. Coming in at a critical phase of the chase, the right-hander showed his composure by taking charge of the bowlers whenever required. Iyer scored 50 in just 29 balls, including four fours and three sixes. After his dismissal, Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis took their side over the line.
