The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) was called off due to persistent rain at Eden Gardens on Monday, April 6. The abandonment meant both teams shared one point each, impacting the early standings of the tournament.

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and made a surprising decision to bat first despite overcast and seam-friendly conditions. The decision quickly backfired as the three-time champions suffered an early collapse. In a fiery opening spell, Xavier Bartlett struck twice in the same over, removing Finn Allen and Cameron Green. Both batters edged swinging deliveries behind the stumps, where Prabhsimran Singh completed the dismissals.

At 25/2 in just 3.4 overs, KKR were under early pressure, with Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi at the crease trying to stabilise the innings. However, rain interrupted play at that point and continued steadily, preventing any further action on the field. Although the rain eventually subsided, the outfield remained too wet for play to resume safely.

The umpires conducted inspections but determined that conditions were unsuitable, and there was insufficient time to stage even a reduced five-over contest. After discussions with both captains, Rahane and Shreyas Iyer the match was officially abandoned.

The shared points slightly altered the standings. KKR moved to eighth place, having now suffered two losses in three matches which shows a difficult start to their campaign. They had previously lost to Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). On the other hand, PBKS climbed to the top of the table with five points, continuing their strong start to the season after victories over Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Looking ahead, PBKS are scheduled to face SRH on April 11 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. Meanwhile, KKR will aim to bounce back when they take on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 9 at Eden Gardens.
