India steamroll Sri Lanka by 302 runs
In the 33rd match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis won the toss and elected to field first. India faced an early setback as their captain, Rohit Sharma, departed in the second ball of the match. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli then steadied the ship, building a promising partnership that seemed destined for centuries. However, Sri Lanka's Dilshan Madushanka intervened, dismissing Gill for 92 with an attempted uppercut and catching Kohli at short cover for 88, denying him a chance to equal Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most ODI centuries.
Shreyas Iyer, under scrutiny for his batting form, showcased his prowess with a rapid 82 off 56 balls, including three fours and six sixes, boosting India's total to 357. A late cameo by Ravindra Jadeja, contributing 35 off 24 balls, further bolstered the team's imposing score.
Sri Lanka's chase faltered against a formidable Indian bowling attack. Jasprit Bumrah struck early, removing Pathum Nissanka on the first ball, while Mohammed Siraj's double-wicket maiden over left Sri Lanka struggling at four wickets down for just three runs. Mohammed Shami's fiery spell added to Sri Lanka's woes, securing a five-wicket haul and taking his tournament tally to 14 wickets, while Siraj claimed three wickets, and Bumrah and Jadeja took one each. Sri Lanka's collapse resulted in a staggering 302-run victory for India.
