Young India pacer Arshdeep Singh is the most talked about person in Indian cricket at the moment. Chasing 182 runs, Pakistan needed 31 runs in 15 deliveries and the match was evenly poised when Arshdeep dropped a sitter of Asif Ali in Ravi Bishnoi’s over which eventually helped Pakistan gain momentum in the match and they eventually won it by 5 wickets.
The Indian captain Rohit Sharma was furious following that drop catch and so were the millions of fans on social media. However, a lot of support has also come on the way of the 23-year-old. Former India International Wasim Jaffer agrees with the fact that it was a costly miss and believes that the catch could have actually turned the match in India’s favour.
“There’s no doubt that it was a costly miss. You don’t expect to drop a sitter in this level of cricket but it happens in cricket at times. It’s a high pressure game after all. Anyway, if Asif Ali would have been dismissed in that situation, the following batters do not have the ability to hit boundaries like the way Asif Ali does. So, that’s why I believe it was a costly catch to drop. However, you can’t just blame a drop catch, it happens in cricket. I believe India would have been the favourites if Asif Ali would have been dismissed in that situation” said Wasim Jaffer in BatBricks7 presents Run Ki Runneeti' on CricTracker.
Virat getting that score was crucial from the team's point of view: Rohit Sharma
Over the past three matches in the Asia Cup, former India captain Virat Kohli has shown his class all over again. Against Pakistan, in the Super Four fixture, the 33-year-old remained not-out after scoring 60 off 44 deliveries. When the other players were getting dismissed, Virat held one end and gave the much-needed support to the team.
Even though India lost the match, the Indian captain was impressed with Kohli’s innings. His return back to form is a welcoming sign and in the post-match press conference, Kohli also stated how he’s enjoying the game at the moment. On the other hand, Rohit lauded his former captain after the game and said how Virat’s innings helped the team build momentum in the middle.
“His (Virat Kohli) form is brilliant, there's no doubt. He batted sensibly in the middle. We needed somebody to stay and keep the tempo. Virat getting that score, staying till the end, it was crucial for us,” said the Indian captain after a disappointing loss in the hands of Pakistan.
