'It's not a good look' - Nat Sciver-Brunt urged to follow Harry Brook's example amid WPL-England dilemma

Lauren Winfield-Hill has called on the England captain to prioritise international cricket over her lucrative Mumbai Indians contract during the scheduling clash between the WPL and Sri Lanka T20Is.

England Women will face Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series scheduled for February 1, 3, and 5, with the matches set to overlap the final stages of the Women's Premier League. The ECB has indicated it will permit players to complete their WPL commitments even if doing so means missing the bilateral series against Sri Lanka. This scheduling conflict has created a significant decision point for England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, who has been retained by Mumbai Indians for the 2027 WPL season.

Sciver-Brunt is among the WPL's highest-earning players, securing approximately £320,000 for the competition. She remains one of only two England players retained by WPL franchises for the 2027 edition, with Sophie Ecclestone set to represent UP Warriorz. The WPL auction, scheduled for October 28 in Kochi, will feature only two English players entering the bidding process: Sophia Dunkley and Kira Chathli.

"She absolutely should be there in my opinion if she wants to continue captaining England. It's not a good look," said Winfield-Hill to Wisden.

"You can't talk about playing for England means the world for you unless you back that up with your actions. It'll be interesting how it all plays out, and money always talks. The amount of money that she's on vs what she would be earning for England would be significant. But I just think if you want to continue as England captain you should be playing for England," she added.

Why the scheduling clash matters?

If Sciver-Brunt misses the Sri Lanka T20I series, she will have captained England in only four of the 14 T20Is played during the preceding 12-month period. Sciver-Brunt has already missed significant international cricket this year due to a calf injury. She was ruled out of England's T20I series against India in May 2026 while undergoing rehabilitation, and the same injury limited her to just four appearances during England's T20 World Cup campaign.

Harry Brook's precedent for England prioritisation

Winfield-Hill drew a direct parallel to Harry Brook's decision regarding the men's IPL. Brook withdrew from the 2025 IPL edition and was subsequently banned from entering the auction for two years. Winfield-Hill explained that Brook prioritised his England commitments despite the financial cost of stepping away from the tournament.

"I hate to draw parallels to the men's game, but you've got to have huge respect for Harry Brook and the decision that he made on the IPL. And that was before he was England captain. 'That is a shit load of money, but I care about playing for England.'" said Winfield-Hill.

The ECB has previously allowed players to miss bilateral T20Is in favour of WPL participation. During the 2024 WPL season, four England players, Ecclestone, Sciver-Brunt, Alice Capsey and Danni Wyatt-Hodge, arrived late for the New Zealand series after completing their WPL obligations. The T20I series between England and Sri Lanka was originally scheduled to take place after the WPL concluded. However, with the Champions Trophy having been moved to the February window, the ECB and Sri Lanka Cricket have agreed to advance the series to begin before the WPL's final stages commence.
