India bowling coach Morne Morkel has described Kuldeep Yadav as a genuine match-winner for the T20I series against West Indies, which begins on October 6 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Kuldeep, who has 95 T20I wickets as of June 2026, requires five more to reach the 100-wicket milestone in the format.

The T20I series follows India's 2-1 victory in the preceding ODI series against West Indies. West Indies won the third ODI on October 3 in New Chandigarh, completing what was described as the highest successful ODI run chase. Shreyas Iyer captains India for the T20I leg, with Tilak Varma as vice-captain.

“Kuldeep spoke about it in the past after the ODI series that he feels he’s bowling well again. And that is great news for us. For us, he’s a massive match-winner, he’s confident, he’s bowling well," Morkel said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

When did Kuldeep last play a T20I and what is his current standing?

Kuldeep's most recent T20I appearance came on February 15, 2026, against Pakistan. His return to the format for this series represents a notable recall, and the backing from the coaching staff signals that he is firmly in India's plans at this stage of the bilateral calendar.

With 95 T20I wickets confirmed as of June 2026, Kuldeep sits five short of becoming a 100-wicket bowler in the format. The milestone adds personal significance to his performances in Lucknow and across the remainder of the series, though the team's requirements will naturally take precedence.

How is India's bowling attack shaped for the T20I series?

India's bowling group for the T20I series includes Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav. The combination offers variety across pace and spin, giving the captain multiple options in different conditions and match situations.

Kuldeep's role within this group is seen as flexible. Morkel's remarks suggest the spinner can be deployed across different phases of an innings, and his experience at this level makes him a reliable option when wickets are needed. The opening T20I at Lucknow on October 6 will be the first opportunity for Kuldeep to make an impact and move closer to the 100-wicket landmark.

“Alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep gives India another genuine ‘match-winner’ card, allowing flexible one-over or two-over spells to disrupt batting rhythm,” Morkel said.
