LPL 2025 to be played from November 27 to December 23
The fixtures are set to be played across three venues in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced the dates of the sixth instalment of the Lanka Premier League. The 2025 edition of the five-team tournament will be played from November 27 to December 23 later this year. The fixtures are set to be played across three venues in Sri Lanka; R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, and Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla.
The LPL has been a perfect blend of homegrown talent and overseas seasoned professionals. Its inaugural edition was played in 2020. Since then, the 20-over spectacle has been occurring every year and has been contributing to the nation's cricketing framework quite significantly. LPL's Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela explained that the LPL was planned in accordance with the 2026 T20 World Cup.
“The idea to conduct the LPL during this timeframe is aimed at aligning the tournament with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026,” stated Dodanwela, in an SLC release dated Friday, August 1.
Sri Lanka Cricket dismisses false claims of financial crisis
Jaffna Kings have been the most successful franchise in the five-season history of the showpiece Sri Lankan T20 event. They have come out on top on four out of the five occasions. Kandy Falcons (formerly known as B-Love Kandy) won the 2023 season.
The Galle-based franchise (previously known as Galle Gladiators and currently named Galle Marvels) have emerged as runners-up three times in the five seasons. Wanindu Hasaranga has emerged as the Player of the Tournament twice (2020 and 2023). The 2024 season was the first time an overseas player bagged the Player of the Tournament accolade in South Africa's Rilee Rossouw.
The first two finals of the tournament were won by the sides batting first. The trend has reversed since the past three years, with the winners of the several editions being the teams batting second. It will be intriguing to witness how things pan out in the upcoming season, which promises a lot of entertainment and quality cricket.
