In a recent development, the Madras High Court has handed a 15-day jail sentence to IPS officer Sampath Kumar for his bold claim involving Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni in the infamous 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal.
The legendary former India captain, not one to take such allegations lightly, swiftly filed a petition against the officer's assertion. Now, justice has been served, with the court ruling in favour of Dhoni and issuing a prison term for Kumar. However, there's a twist in the tale as the bench of Justices SS Sundar and Sunder Mohan has suspended the sentence for 30 days, allowing Kumar to file a further appeal in the matter.
Previously, MSD filed a case against prominent Indian news channel as well
This is not the first time Dhoni has found himself involved in legal issues related to the spot-fixing scandal. Previously, he filed a case against a prominent Indian news channel for making remarks against him in connection to the controversy that shocked Indian cricket a decade ago.
Three players from Rajasthan Royals – S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandela, and Ankeet Chavan – were accused of fixing cricket matches in exchange for money from bookies. Arrested by the Delhi police and banned for a lifetime by the BCCI, the matter eventually reached the Supreme Court. Though the apex body found the trio guilty, it left the determination of the ban length to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
In a separate case related to the same scandal, owners of the Royals franchise and Gurunath Meiyappan, son of CSK's co-owner N Srinivasan and former BCCI supremo, were implicated in illegal betting activities. Consequently, both franchises faced a two-year ban, missing the 2016 and 2017 IPL editions.
Moving ahead, it will be interesting to follow the updates on this case. Meanwhile, fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating seeing MSD in action once again as he is poised to lead CSK in another season.
