Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders locked horns at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Kolkata posted 185/6 on the board on a batting-friendly surface. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan gave Mumbai Indians a quick start while chasing 186 in the 22nd Indian Premier League 2023 match on Sunday, April 16. The duo added 65 off just 29 balls to put Mumbai Indians in a comfortable position, but Umesh Yadav took a flying catch to dismiss Rohit in the fifth over to get Kolkata back in the game.
Umesh conceded 17 runs in the third over as Mumbai openers set the stage on fire. Nitish Rana handed the fifth over to spinner Suyash Sharma, but Rohit welcomed the youngster with a maximum over deep square leg. But Suyash was quick to settle the score after three deliveries. Rohit got a leading edge as he tried to push it over the mid-off, but Umesh dived to his left and pulled off a brilliant flying catch to give Kolkata Knight Riders the breakthrough they needed.
Meanwhile, Rohit missed the first innings of the match due to a stomach bug, while Arjun Tendulkar made his IPL debut. But Venkatesh Iyer single-handedly guided Kolkata Knight Riders to a total of 185/6.
Camron Green gave Mumbai Indians a promising start with Narayan Jagadeesan’s wicket in the second over. But Venkatesh was sensational from the start as he smashed a 23-ball fifty and took only 49 balls to reach the 100-run mark. Riley Meredith dismissed Venkatesh in the 18th over as Kolkata batters struggled in the last five overs with just 45 runs.
Hrithik Shokeen emerged as the best bowler for Mumbai Indians with two valuable wickets. Debutants Arjun Tendulkar and Duan Jansen were unable to make a big impact, while Piyush Chawla and Cameron Green picked one wicket each for Mumbai Indians.
