Australia knock England out of World Cup 2023
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad witnessed a gripping showdown between England and Australia in the 36th match of the ODI World Cup. England's decision to field first after winning the toss proved beneficial as Australia stumbled early, losing their openers quickly. Despite the setback, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith orchestrated a resilient 75-run partnership before Smith's departure. Cameron Green and Labuschagne then steadied the innings, aided by a brisk cameo from Adam Zampa, guiding Australia to a competitive total of 286 runs. Notably, Chris Woakes shone for England, securing four crucial wickets, including those of David Warner and Travis Head.
In response, England faced a challenging start with Jonny Bairstow's early dismissal on the first ball of the innings. Although David Malan and Ben Stokes exhibited commendable performances with 50 and 64 runs respectively, England struggled to match Australia's pace. Losing wickets at regular intervals, they succumbed to Australia's formidable bowling attack. Despite Moeen Ali's valiant effort towards the end, Adam Zampa's adept bowling claimed three vital wickets, ultimately leading to England's total of 253 runs and sealing their elimination from the tournament. Australia's triumph bolstered their confidence for the upcoming clash against Afghanistan, while England geared up to face the Netherlands in their next match.
Australia now face off against Afghanistan in their next match whereas England will lock horns with Netherlands in their next.
