Moeen Ali 'not thinking too far ahead' as 2024 India tour question looms
Moeen Ali came out of retirement to participate in the Ashes 2023.
England all-rounder Moeen Ali came out of retirement on England captain Ben Stokes’ request to participate in the Ashes 2023. The 36-year-old played the first Test of the series; however, he struggled with finger blisters and bowled through pain for his side throughout the game. Following his injury, Ali was rested in the second Test before returning again for the third Test in Leeds.
The off-spinner picked up prized scalps of Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne in the second innings to set up a three-wicket win for his side. Speaking about his future in the Test side, the Birmingham-born cricketer said that he’s not thinking too far ahead and is just focused on the last two matches. Notably, England will be touring India in 2024, where Moeen services will be required on spin-friendly tracks of the country.
“Not really, to be honest with you. I think for me; it’s about getting through these two games if I play these two games. It’s not easy, I find Test cricket really hard. It is the hardest and best format out there, for sure. But I’ve really enjoyed my time since I’ve come back, and it’s been a brilliant environment. I wish it was this 5 years ago,” Moeen was quoted as saying by HindustanTimes.
He further stated that Captain Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum will be having a chat with him after the end of the series.
I’m not thinking too far ahead: Moeen Ali
“I’m not thinking too far ahead, I’m sure Baz and Stokesy will probably speak to me after the series or after the summer, but for me at the moment it’s just this series. I’m not saying yes, I’m not saying no,” he added.
In the Ashes 2023, Moeen has scored 63 runs from four innings and has also picked five wickets from two matches. He will be eager to contribute with both bat and ball in the fourth Test starting from July 19 at Old Trafford, Manchester, as England look to level the series with a win.
