Mohammed Shami, East Zone warned over apparent unfair-play act in Duleep Trophy final

On-field umpire Virender Sharma pulled up Mohammed Shami during the Duleep Trophy 2026-27 final at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on September 8, 2026, with East Zone receiving a formal warning over an apparent unfair-play act related to the condition of the ball.

The incident took place in the 60th over of South Zone's second innings on Day 3 of the final. What does MCC Law 41.3 say about ball maintenance?

Under Law 41.3.2.1, players are permitted to polish the ball using sweat, provided no artificial substance is involved and the process does not waste time. However, Law 41.3.1 requires umpires to conduct regular inspections and intervene if they suspect an attempt to unfairly alter the ball’s condition.

In this case, Sharma’s decision to inspect the ball and warn East Zone was in line with that responsibility. Had the umpires concluded that the ball’s condition had been unfairly altered, the opposition could have requested a replacement, with five penalty runs also applicable under Law 41.3.4. Since no penalty was awarded, the incident appeared to have been treated as a warning rather than a confirmed breach.
