Monty Desai takes charge as Canada men's team's head coach

Monty Desai has officially taken charge of Canada's men's side as head coach, Cricket Canada confirmed. Desai has a strong CV as a head coach, having plied his trade for top international sides like Afghanistan and Nepal. On the other hand, Desai also has the experience of working in domestic and franchise leagues in India and abroad, adding to his testimonials.

Cricket Canada (CC) had recently put out a vacancy for a head coach, following Ingleton Liburd's departure from the side, shortly after the recent T20 World Cup 2026. Desai, who was onboarded, expressed his excitement ahead of his appointment as the head coach of the Canadian side, saying that he is well aware of the potential that their team holds. 

"I am honoured to take on this responsibility and thank Cricket Canada for their trust. My previous experience in Canada has given me a clear understanding of the system's potential and the passion that exists for the game," Desai said in an official statement as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

"Associate cricket is an important driver in the global growth of cricket today, and teams like Nepal and Afghanistan have demonstrated what belief, discipline, and fearlessness can unlock. Canada has a similar opportunity, and my focus will be on building a culture that translates this potential into consistent performances on the international stage," he added.

Cricket Canada has a clear goal with the appointment of Desai, which is to ensure a restoration of the professionalism within their cricketing set-up. The board wishes to move forward with a purpose-driven approach.

"Our foremost priority is to restore Cricket Canada's prominence through performance, professionalism, and a renewed and vitalised sense of purpose. Appointing Monty Desai reflects this vision. His experience with associate nations, most notably Nepal and Afghanistan, demonstrates his ability to transform teams through effective leadership, discipline, and a clear long-term plan," Arvinder Khosa, president of Cricket Canada, said.

"As we build on our recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup appearance, this year marks a pivotal moment, and we are confident that under his leadership, the team will make significant progress," Khosa added.
