Mumbai Indians become first T20 franchise to play 300 matches
MI have won five IPL titles in 18 editions.
The Mumbai Indians (MI), five-time champions of the Indian Premier League, created history by becoming the first T20 franchise to appear in 300 matches. The milestone came during their IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The side is currently led by Hardik Pandya, marking a new leadership phase for the franchise.
MI joined an elite list in T20 cricket, becoming only the third team overall to reach 300 matches. England’s Somerset County Cricket Club were the first to achieve the milestone with 303 matches, followed by Pakistan national cricket team, who reached the mark during the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Among IPL franchises, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are second on the list with 287 matches and are expected to cross the landmark soon.
Mumbai’s T20 appearances include both IPL and the now-defunct Champions League Twenty20, where they played 22 matches, winning 11 and losing nine. However, it is in the IPL that MI built their legacy. The team has won five titles, in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, all under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. In total IPL matches, MI have recorded 151 wins and 122 losses, the highest number of appearances by any team.
Why is Mitchell Santner not playing MI vs KKR Match 2?
Consistency has been a hallmark of Mumbai’s success. They have featured in all 19 IPL seasons and reached the playoffs 11 times, second only to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who have 12 playoff appearances. MI have played 22 playoff matches, winning 14, and reached the final six times, losing only once, in 2010 against CSK.
The early years were less successful, with no titles in the first five seasons. Their best performance then came in the 2011 Champions League T20 under Harbhajan Singh. A turning point arrived in 2013 when Ricky Ponting handed over captaincy to Rohit Sharma mid-season. Mumbai went on to win seven of their next nine matches, qualified for the playoffs, and defeated CSK in the final to claim their maiden IPL title.
That victory sparked a golden era. Between 2013 and 2020, MI emerged as the most dominant IPL side. Under Rohit’s captaincy, they won 87 matches in 158 games, the highest in that period. CSK, led by MS Dhoni, followed with 77 wins.
Mumbai’s last title came in 2020, making them the first team to win five IPL trophies and one of the few to successfully defend their crown. Rohit led the team until 2023 before passing the baton to Hardik Pandya, signaling the beginning of a new chapter after one of the most successful eras in T20 franchise history.
