Naman Dhir made an immediate impact on his T20I debut for India during the first match of the series against West Indies on October 6, 2026, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The all-rounder took 3 wickets for 31 runs from 4 overs, emerging as India's most successful bowler in the match. His performance included a remarkable sequence where three West Indies batters hit him for sixes, only for Dhir to dismiss each of them with his next delivery.

Kris Srikkanth, the 1983 World Cup winner, praised Dhir's debut showing and made a bold statement about the all-rounder's impact on the Indian squad. Speaking on the performance, Srikkanth suggested that Dhir's immediate success had effectively ended Washington Sundar's prospects in the shorter formats.

"Naman Dhir has now come in at Washington Sundar's place as a replacement player. Washington Sundar keeps getting injured after every two matches. Now Naman Dhir has come in as his replacement and finished him," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

"How can you drop Naman Dhir now from ODIs and T20Is? He has immediately grabbed that spot. Now Washington Sundar can only play for India in Test cricket," he added.

Srikkanth's assessment of Dhir's bowling intelligence

Srikkanth attributed Dhir's success to his intelligent approach to bowling and his understanding of T20 cricket dynamics. The former India batsman noted that Dhir adjusts his pace intelligently based on the situation, demonstrating tactical awareness beyond his years in international cricket.

"When he bowls fast, he gets hit for sixes. So he immediately slows the ball down, which shows that he's a very thoughtful bowler. He's ideal for T20 cricket," Srikkanth said.

"He bowls in such a way that he envisions himself batting and how one would bowl to him. That's how much of a thinking cricketer he looks to be. That's why he's an intelligent bowler," he added.

The case for removing the Impact Player rule

Dhir's path to international cricket included a significant stint in the Indian Premier League, where he played all 14 games for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 and scored 318 runs. However, despite his batting contributions, Dhir did not bowl a single ball during the IPL season, limiting his opportunity to showcase his bowling skills at the franchise level.

Srikkanth also used Dhir's emergence as an argument for structural changes in the IPL format. He contended that the Impact Player rule, which allows teams to make tactical substitutions, has hindered the development of genuine all-rounders in Indian cricket.

"This is why the Impact Player rule should be removed in the IPL. That's how you'll produce genuine all-rounders. Now you've got a good batting all-rounder in Naman Dhir. Today he bowled four overs, but even if he gives you two overs on a consistent basis, it'll be huge for India and MI," Srikkanth said.

Srikkanth expressed confidence in Dhir's future prospects, suggesting that the all-rounder possessed the complete skill set required for success at the highest level. He noted that despite limited bowling opportunities in the IPL, Dhir's performance on debut indicated he was ready for international cricket.

"He'll take loads of wickets even in the upcoming IPL. He must have bowled only 10 overs maximum in his IPL career, yet he bowled four overs today. He has everything, including luck." Srikkanth said.
