Nathan Lyon became the first Australian bowler, third overall, to take 100 wickets against India as he achieved the feat during the ongoing second Test match between the two sides at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Lyon achieved the feat in his 24th Test match against India, picking up the wicket of KS Bharat in the second innings to complete his five-wicket haul.
The only bowlers to have more or equal number of wickets than Lyon in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy are former Indian spinners Anil Kumble and Ravichandran Ashwin. While Kumble is the all-time leading wicket-taker in the series with 111 wickets in 20 matches, Ashwin stands on the same level with 100 wickets in 20 matches.
Records tumble with Lyon’s fifer
Lyon's five-wicket haul in the second Test was his eighth against India in Tests, which is the most by any bowler against the Indian team. He went past Muttiah Muralitharan, who had taken seven five-wicket hauls against India. In India, Lyon has taken five five-wicket hauls, which is the joint-highest along with former Australian captain Richie Benaud.
Among Australian bowlers, Lyon is fourth on the list of most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket, behind Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, and Dennis Lillee. Lyon now has 22 five-wicket hauls in Tests and is the fourth highest wicket-taker for Australia in the format. In away Tests, Lyon has taken 13 five-wicket hauls, which is the third-most by an Australian bowler after Warne and McGrath.
Among active spinners, Lyon is second on the list of most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket, behind India's Ravichandran Ashwin. Lyon has 22 five-wicket hauls in Tests, while Ashwin has 31. Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan is third on the list with 19 five-wicket hauls in the format.
Lyon's achievement is a testament to his consistency and effectiveness against the Indian team, which has traditionally been known for its prowess against spin bowling. With his impressive record against India, Lyon has cemented his place among the all-time greats of Australian cricket.
As Lyon continues to add to his tally of wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, it will be interesting to see if he can surpass Kumble's record of 111 wickets and become the leading wicket-taker in the series.
