'Pakistan cricket has hit a panic button' - Ramiz Raja slams PCB for team overhaul after Lord's defeat

Pakistan cricket underwent a dramatic overhaul on Monday following consecutive Test defeats in England. The Pakistan Cricket Board replaced seven players and two coaches mid-series, a decision that drew sharp criticism from former Pakistan batter and former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja. Pakistan had lost the first Test at Headingley by an innings and the second at Lord's by 194 runs, with the team bowled out for less than 200 in each of their four innings across both matches.

Ramiz Raja expressed his disapproval of the sweeping changes during an interaction. The former PCB chairman said the decision reflected poorly on Pakistan cricket and questioned the logic behind removing so many players and the coaching staff simultaneously. He highlighted the unprecedented nature of such action during an active Test series.

"I'm trying to convince myself this is all OK, but it is not. It just shows Pakistan cricket has hit a panic button. It's not good for the game, it's not good for the confidence of the players who have come in, or for the players who are left, because it makes you a selfish team," Raja said via BBC Radio 5 Live.

Ramiz Raja's criticism of the mid-series overhaul

The Pakistan Cricket Board sent home Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq and Salman Ali Agha among the seven players removed from the squad. Head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and assistant Umar Gul were released from their positions. They were replaced by Pakistan white-ball coach Mike Hesson as the new head coach and former Australia seamer Ashley Noffke as the assistant.

Raja questioned whether the new players brought in had the experience to handle Test cricket at this level. Arafat Minhas, Mohammed Imran Jr, Said Baig, Mohammad Imran and Razaullah received call-ups, while batters Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, who have previous Test experience, were also included in the revised squad. The former chairman expressed uncertainty about the strategy behind the changes.

Questions over the experience of new squad members

"What is the guarantee they will get the results? Some of these guys have not played Test cricket. I've got no idea why this was done," Raja said.

Raja remained critical of the unprecedented nature of the decision in world cricket. He drew a comparison to football management changes and expressed his own bewilderment at the situation.

"How many times have we seen this happen in world cricket? Never, ever. This is more like football, midway through the season, firing a manager. If you ask me how things can be fixed, I've got no idea,” the cricketer-turned-commentator concluded.
