Reports: IPL 2026 Player Auction likely to be held on December 16 in Goa
BCCI logistics team has informed franchises of the December 16 auction date and ITC Grand Goa venue via WhatsApp, with a briefing scheduled for December 15.
The BCCI logistics team has communicated to all IPL franchises that the IPL 2026 Player Auction will be held on December 16 at ITC Grand Goa, with an auction briefing set for December 15. The information was shared via WhatsApp on Saturday, October 17, 2026, and is intended to help franchise representatives plan their logistics and travel arrangements ahead of the event.
No official email carrying the confirmed date and venue has been dispatched to franchise owners or chief executives as yet, meaning the announcement remains informal at this stage.
As part of the same communication, the BCCI logistics team asked each franchise to share the size of its delegation for the December 16 auction. The request signals that the board has already begun making on-ground arrangements at the Goa venue.
What does the auction timeline mean for franchises?
Franchises are required to submit their retained and released player lists by November 15, 2026. The December 16 auction date therefore gives every team approximately one month after that deadline to refine their bidding strategies before proceedings begin at ITC Grand Goa.
The December 15 briefing is expected to walk franchise representatives through auction procedures ahead of the main event the following day. Delegation size details requested by the BCCI will help the board finalise seating and logistical arrangements at the venue.
The auction will also represent the return of the IPL player auction to Indian soil. The three preceding editions were staged overseas, in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi respectively, making the Goa event a notable shift back to a domestic setting.
Is there a scheduling conflict on December 16?
December 16 is also the date on which India are due to face Sri Lanka in an ODI in Bengaluru, placing the IPL auction and an international fixture on the same calendar day. Whether the auction date will be revised once a formal BCCI communication is issued remains an open question.
"The IPL 2026 Player Auction will take place on December 16, 2026 at ITC Grand Goa and auction briefing will be held on December 15, 2026," said BCCI as reported by Cricbuzz.
There have additionally been reports suggesting the venue for the first match of the India-Sri Lanka series, scheduled for December 13 in New Delhi, could be changed. The BCCI has denied any plans to relocate that fixture, though the situation continues to be monitored. The status of both scheduling matters is yet to be officially resolved.
