Kolkata Knight Riders have renewed their interest in trading Hardik Pandya from Mumbai Indians ahead of the November 15 retention deadline, with the franchise now facing a leadership vacuum following Ajinkya Rahane's retirement. Sources indicate that KKR are now considered frontrunners, with a 75 per cent likelihood of signing Pandya for IPL 2027, making them the most serious suitor among the franchises in the running.

Pandya's second stint at Mumbai Indians proved deeply troubled. He did not feature in a single match during the last IPL season, and his time at the franchise drew scrutiny over concerns about his fitness as well as questions surrounding his entourage accompanying him to venues. Mumbai Indians are now aggressively looking to complete a trade before the mini-auction scheduled for December 16 in Goa, and they do not wish to take Pandya's situation into the auction unsettled. The trading window closes one week before the mini-auction and reopens for one week once the IPL is a month away from starting.

Several franchises have fielded inquiries from Mumbai Indians regarding Pandya, with KKR and Chennai Super Kings among those who have shown interest. As reported by The Telegraph, KKR's renewed push is driven in part by the captaincy void left at the franchise, and the belief within the camp that Pandya's strategic instincts as a leader make him a credible fit for the role.

Why did KKR hold back initially, and what has changed?

KKR did not show significant interest in Pandya during the initial round of discussions, primarily because of concerns over his fitness and the fact that talks were mainly being driven by Mumbai Indians. However, the leadership gap created by Rahane's departure has shifted KKR's calculus, and the franchise now views Pandya as potentially their best option to fill that void, particularly given that a captaincy guarantee would be a condition Pandya is likely to seek.

The Knights are unwilling to part with either Sunil Narine or Varun Chakravarthy, and they have already rejected a proposal from Mumbai Indians that included Rinku Singh as part of a swap deal alongside Harshit Rana. KKR are also reluctant to let go of Rinku Singh under any arrangement. Cameron Green, the Australian allrounder, is unlikely to be available for a major portion of IPL 2027 given that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy runs through January-February and he is also expected to be part of the five-Test Ashes series against England.

The key variable now is 22-year-old Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Mumbai Indians are pressing for Raghuvanshi as part of the exchange alongside Harshit Rana, and much of the outcome depends on whether KKR are willing to release him. Raghuvanshi is regarded as an exciting batting prospect who has been in good form in domestic cricket, and his mentor Abhishek Nayar is the head coach at KKR, adding a layer of complexity to any decision to trade him away. Discussions between the two franchises are expected to resume in the coming week before a final call is made.

Where do Chennai Super Kings and other franchises stand in the Pandya trade picture?

Chennai Super Kings had shown initial interest in a Pandya trade, but a significant obstacle emerged when Mumbai Indians expressed keen interest in young batter Ayush Mhatre. CSK categorically turned down that demand. A possible CSK-MI arrangement involving Shivam Dube and another bowler has been floated as an alternative option, though CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan publicly denied that any such discussions were taking place.

One complication for CSK is that they would not be in a position to offer Pandya the captaincy, which remains a likely condition from his side. Rajasthan Royals players Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi have also entered the broader conversation around Mumbai Indians' rebuild. Bishnoi fits the profile of an Indian spinner that MI are seeking, while either Raghuvanshi or Jaiswal could add a Mumbai-rooted identity to the franchise. A trade involving one of the two for IPL 2027 remains a possibility that is being explored. As a recall, Pandya led Gujarat Titans to their inaugural IPL title in 2022, a record that continues to underline his credentials as a captain capable of building a winning culture from the ground up.
