Legendary cricketer Rohit Sharma, who now earns in crores annually, has revealed that he spent his first cricket earnings on a mobile phone by saving his daily meal allowance over a period of time so that he could stay in contact with his family while travelling for cricket during his initial days into the sport.

Rohit explained that during his early cricket days he received a daily allowance for meals but chose not to spend it on food. He set the money aside with the specific aim of buying a phone, because frequent travel meant he was regularly out of contact with his family, which troubled him greatly. He also revealed that when he received his first cheque, he handed the entire amount to his family.

"I bought a phone with my first earnings. At that time, we used to get money for daily meals. But instead of spending that money on food, I used to save it. We had to travel a lot. Because of that, I was not able to stay in contact with my family. That used to make me feel very bad," Rohit said via Sony LIV.

"At that time, everyone had a phone, but I did not. Because of that, I was not able to communicate with people outside. In that situation, I felt that buying a phone would be the right investment. So I saved the money and bought a phone. That was my first investment. After that, when I received my first cheque, I gave the entire amount to my family," the Nagpur-born added.

The account offers a candid look at the financial constraints Rohit navigated during the early phase of his cricket career, when staying connected with family required deliberate sacrifice.

The India batter made this disclosure on Family Full House with Rohit Sharma, his television hosting debut, which premiered on September 19, 2026. The show is based on the globally successful Family Feud format, produced by Fremantle, and airs on Saturdays and Sundays.
