Saransh Jain earns maiden India Test call-up for Sri Lanka tour: Here's why the 33-year-old spinner was selected

India have handed a maiden Test call-up to off-spinning all-rounder Saransh Jain for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, rewarding the Madhya Pradesh cricketer for his consistent domestic performances and impressive showing for India A.

The 33-year-old has been drafted into the squad after Washington Sundar was ruled out of the opening Test due to a hamstring injury sustained during India's recently concluded ODI series against England. Jain's selection marks a significant milestone in his career, having earned his first opportunity at the highest level after years of delivering in domestic cricket.

Strong India A performances strengthened his case

Jain boosted his chances during India A's recent tour of Sri Lanka, where he showcased his all-round ability. In the second unofficial four-day match in Galle, the off-spinner remained unbeaten on 70 before producing a match-winning performance with the ball, claiming six wickets.

Across the two four-day games against Sri Lanka A, Jain impressed with both bat and ball, underlining his ability to contribute in multiple departments. His performances came at the right time, making him a strong replacement option following Sundar's injury.

Impressive domestic record backs selection

Jain has been one of the most reliable all-rounders in the Indian domestic circuit over the past few seasons. In 54 first-class matches, he has scored 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75, including two centuries, while also picking up 188 wickets at an average of 27.30.

He also enjoyed an impressive Ranji Trophy campaign last season, finishing with 30 wickets in just seven matches, further strengthening his credentials for national selection.

Jadeja returns as India retain settled squad

Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja returns to the Test squad after recovering from a tennis elbow injury. India have largely retained the core of their squad, with Jasprit Bumrah returning to spearhead the pace attack.

However, both Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan have been named subject to fitness clearance. Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence, has not been included for the Sri Lanka tour.

The two-match Test series will begin on August 15 in Galle, while the second Test will be played at the SSC in Colombo from August 23. Before the series gets underway, India will play a four-day practice match in Colombo starting on August 7.
