Shimron Hetmyer has been called up to the West Indies squad for the second and third One-Day Internationals against New Zealand, replacing the injured Justin Greaves. Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed the change after Greaves sustained a back injury that ruled him out of the opening ODI in Providence. The all-rounder has since returned to Barbados, where he will continue his rehabilitation under the supervision of the medical team.

Hetmyer’s inclusion comes after a stint in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 with the Seattle Orcas. The left-handed batter was originally unavailable for the opening three matches of the New Zealand series because of his MLC commitments. However, Seattle Orcas finished fifth in the league standings and failed to qualify for the playoffs, allowing Hetmyer to join the national squad earlier than expected.

The 29-year-old scored 164 runs in 10 MLC matches this season at a strike rate of 136.66. Although his tournament ended without a playoff appearance, his availability has provided a timely boost for the West Indies batting unit ahead of the remaining matches in Providence.

Hetmyer last featured in an ODI for the West Indies in June 2025. He was recalled for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in June this year but did not make the playing XI in any of the games. His latest call-up now gives him another opportunity to cement his place in the limited-overs side.

Meanwhile, Greaves remains under close observation. CWI stated that he will be reassessed before the final two ODIs against New Zealand, as well as the two-match Test series against Pakistan that follows. The all-rounder recently enjoyed a memorable Test series against Sri Lanka, scoring a career-best 180 in the final Test. His outstanding performances earned him the Player of the Series award and played a crucial role in helping the West Indies secure their first Test series victory since 2023.

West Indies have already taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series after registering a convincing seven-wicket victory in the opening match. The first three ODIs are being played in Providence, while the final two fixtures will be held in Bridgetown. CWI is expected to announce the squad for those matches later this week.
