Shubman Gill equals Yuvraj Singh, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni in elite ODI record
Shubman Gill claimed his seventh ODI Player of the Series award after India beat West Indies 2-1, joining three Indian legends on the same tally.
Shubman Gill has equalled MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh by winning his seventh ODI Player of the Series award. The milestone arrived after India defeated West Indies 2-1 in the three-match series, with Gill producing a commanding sequence of performances across the contest.
Gill finished the series with 334 runs. He opened with 110 in the first ODI, then struck an unbeaten 223 in the second match before contributing 1 in the third. The volume and quality of those innings across three games were sufficient to earn him the award for the seventh time in his ODI career.
Every one of Gill's seven Player of the Series awards has come since 2022, a four-year window in which he has been the most decorated Indian cricketer in this particular category in ODIs. Notably, no other Indian player has collected more than three such awards in the same period, which underlines how consistently Gill has been the standout performer for India in multi-match ODI assignments.
Where does Gill stand among India's all-time ODI Player of the Series winners?
Sachin Tendulkar leads the all-time list for India with 15 ODI Player of the Series awards. Virat Kohli is second with 11. Gill now shares seventh place with Dhoni, Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh, each of whom reached that tally across careers spanning well over a decade.
The pace at which Gill has reached seven awards is what makes the achievement particularly notable. The three legends he has joined built their tallies over long international careers, whereas Gill has matched them entirely within a four-year period. That rate of accumulation sets him apart from every other Indian cricketer active in the current era and points to how regularly he has been the decisive contributor whenever India have played a multi-match ODI series.

How did the West Indies series unfold beyond Gill's batting?
India posted 351/7 in the second ODI, but West Indies overhauled the target, finishing on 352/5 in 48.2 overs. Shai Hope was central to that chase, remaining unbeaten on 162 to secure victory for the hosts in that match.
The third ODI saw KL Rahul contribute an unbeaten 129 for India, though the side still fell short in that game. The series concluded 2-1 in India's favour across the three matches. Gill acknowledged after the series that India dropped around six or seven catches during the contest, identifying fielding as an area requiring attention ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
