South Africa to expand first-class matches in 2026-27 domestic season

Cricket South Africa is set to significantly increase the number of red-ball fixtures played by provincial teams in the 2026-27 domestic season. The expansion, driven by provincial unions, will take effect when the new season gets under way in September. Full fixtures are scheduled to be announced on August 27.

Each of South Africa's eight Division 1 provincial teams will play ten first-class matches in 2026-27, an increase from seven since the competition was restructured five summers ago. The jump is even more pronounced in Division 2, where each of the seven provincial sides will play 12 first-class matches, double the six they have been accustomed to.

How will the Division 1 first-class competition be structured?

For the purposes of the first-class competition, the eight Division 1 sides have been arranged into two pools of four. Lions, Boland, Dragons and Knights are grouped together, with Western Province, Warriors, Dolphins and Titans forming the second pool.

Within each pool, teams meet one another home and away, producing six matches per side. Every team then faces each of the four sides in the opposing pool once, contributing four additional fixtures and bringing the total to ten per team. The red-ball programme opens in September, with two rounds to be completed before the Australia Test series. It resumes across the November to December window, which runs alongside the Bangladesh and England Test series, and concludes in April with a five-day final.

The Division 1 CSA T20 Challenge will not feature in 2026-27. A new combined Pro20 Cup will take its place, bringing together all 15 domestic sides and South Africa Emerging for a 16-team tournament. The move to a unified T20 competition came at the request of Division 2 teams, who were seeking broader commercial exposure.

Running from late September to mid-November, the Pro20 Cup will see its 16 participants arranged across two groups of eight. Across the group stage and knockout rounds, the tournament will produce 71 matches in total. The top four sides from each group will advance to a Super 8 phase of 12 matches, after which semi-finals and a final will determine the champion. A title sponsor and television broadcast arrangements for the Pro20 Cup are yet to be finalised.

What does the Pro50 schedule look like for 2026-27?

South Africa's 50-over domestic competition, the Pro50, is scheduled to begin in February. The tournament will be contested in a single round-robin format, giving every provincial side a full set of league fixtures before the knockout stage.

A qualifier and final are both pencilled in for late March, providing a clear pathway from the league phase to the title decider. Exact dates within that late March window have not yet been confirmed by Cricket South Africa.
