Under the leadership of Tim Southee, New Zealand have been pretty poor when it comes to Decision Review System (DRS), as the Black Caps got all their last 15 wrong. In the ongoing Test match against Sri Lanka, the team wasted all three reviews in just 48 overs and that is a massive reason to worry about.
Acknowledging the fact, skipper Southee has stated that one needs to go with the gut feeling when it comes to DRS and the 34-year-old also mentioned that he would rather use them and be given not out, than not use them at all.
“We don’t mean to blow them and we could probably take our time a little bit more and get a better system in place. You just go with your gut feel and you’ve got a split second or two to make a decision and we haven’t been great with them.
It’s tough. You get one go at it and you’ve got how many seconds to make a decision. It’s one of those things. It has copped a bit of grief over time, but I’d rather use them and be given not out, than not use them and be out,” Southee said after Day 1 of the first Test as quoted by stuff.co.nz.
Notably, the last successful review that was taken by the New Zealand team was in the first Test against England in Tauranga. Tom Blundell was given out caught behind but replayed showed otherwise. Since then, the Black Caps have failed to cash in when it comes to DRS.
Sri Lanka in driver’s seat in first Test
Courtesy of a brilliant partnership from Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka are in the driver’s seat in the first Test against New Zealand. The Lankan batters stepped up and posted 355 runs on board after the first innings and also showed a lot of promise with the new ball.
They have already dismissed Devn Conway, Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls and if they manage to perform this way, India will be under pressure as both teams are currently fighting for a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
