Stokes will expect to win the Ashes, that is his mentality: Michael Vaughan
England are yet to win a Test match in Australia since the 2010/11 season.
Former English captain Michael Vaughan feels the upcoming Ashes will be Ben Stokes' opportunity for reclaiming the title. England are yet to win a Test match in Australia since the 2010-11 season. They have failed to win a single match out of 15 games played against their arch-rivals Down Under.
Vaughan opined that Stokes will not take stepping up for the team as a burden. He also asserted that there will be a positive environment in the dressing room ahead of the highly-anticipated series.
"I think Ben and his mentality, and the way that he plays his cricket, this is his moment. He has to deliver and he has to get that urn in his hand. And it's not putting him under pressure. They'll be speaking in this kind of language in the dressing room. They will expect to win this series and now's the time to deliver," stated Vaughan, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Vaughan was asked whether England would be fine if the upcoming series ends 2-2. The erstwhile top-order batter said that the English unit won't have any regrets if they end up drawing the series.
"I mean, would I take 2-2 now? Probably, let's be honest. In the last few series, 2010-11 is the only time that I've seen England have success. We won one Test match in 2002-03, we won three Test matches in 2010-11. We haven't won a Test since. So, actually looking at growth in terms of what English cricket is delivering and, crikey, if you could get a two-all series, you'd obviously take that," he added.
England will enter the Ashes on the back of plenty of white-ball cricket under their belt. Their last Test series was the one at home against India, which ended 2-2.
Pat Cummins returns to the nets, Ashes comeback imminent
The Three Lions were recently involved in a white-ball series against New Zealand and the T20I leg was won by them. However, the 50-over segment was one to forget as they were whitewashed in comprehensive fashion by a clinical New Zealand outfit.
